Machu Picchu

The travel series continues!

Machu Picchu is one of the few places in the world that is on my list of places to revisit (Rift Valley Children’s Village in Tanzania, being another). I spent five weeks in Peru in the summer of 2012 as a trip leader and although it was an amazing opportunity, I am itching to go back and explore on my own.

The history and beauty of Machu Picchu took my breath away; it is truly one of the most magical places on Earth.  While I was in Peru, I read, Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time by Mark Adams, which is a travel log of the author’s trip to Peru.  It documents his experience hiking the Inca trail, gives a good history of the city and discusses some of the controversial issues surrounding the landmark.  It was a great read and one that I would recommend to anyone who has travelled or is traveling to Peru.

Without further ado, here are my favorite photos from the trip to Machu Picchu.  Although nothing will ever replace the experience of being there physically, I think the pictures still capture the beauty and majesty of the Andes mountains and the city nested between them.
